Most movers define a local move as one under 50–100 miles, usually staying within the same state. A long-distance (or interstate) move crosses state lines or exceeds that mileage threshold — even a move of just 120 miles that crosses a state border is typically classified and regulated as long-distance.

Pricing works differently

Local movers bill by the hour: crew size × hourly rate × time on site, plus a small travel fee. Long-distance movers bill by shipment weight and distance, calculated as a linehaul charge. This is why a long-distance quote needs your inventory or an accurate room count — the number that drives price is pounds, not hours.

Timelines differ significantly

Local moves are typically completed in a single day, sometimes half a day for smaller homes
Long-distance moves often have a delivery window of several days to two weeks, since your shipment may be consolidated with other customers' loads on the same truck route

Licensing and regulation

Interstate movers must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and carry a USDOT number — you can and should verify this before booking. Local, intrastate moves are typically regulated at the state level instead. Either way, confirm your mover carries active liability and cargo insurance.
